![]() Challenged Athletes Foundation Spokesperson Rudy Garcia-Tolson - 07/24/00 |
Rudy Garcia-Tolson will be on the Travel Channel on November 12, Sunday @ 8PM Pacific Time learning how to kayak with Sierra South. As spokesperson for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, 11-year-old double amputee Rudy Garcia-Tolson was seeking new challenges. He is already a champion swimmer. He runs the mile in 7 minutes, 20 seconds; and 5 kilometers in 24 minutes. He has competed in "too many to count" triathlons. He skateboards. And now, thanks to Sierra South, he kayaks. "I want to try kayaking because it will be another good challenge for me," said Rudy, who took his prosthetic legs off while in the boat. "He doesn't really need them," explained Sierra South's Tom Moore. "He's a champion butterflyer, so he's already got the necessary torso strength." Moore and lead instructor Marc Vernon worked diligently to outfit Rudy's boat, while the would-be kayaker watched intently. Meanwhile, a Castle Creek Productions crew filmed every step of the process, including the Kayak 101 course that Rudy shared with some local teens. Watch for the resulting program in early fall on the Discovery Channel. |
