When the KVRC supercomputer finished crunching the numbers for the ends, moves, multipliers and style points recorded by the judges, Whitney Lonsdale (Liquid Logic) and Jay Kincaid (Dagger) took top honors in Pro Freestyle at the 39th Kern River Kayak and Raft Festival. In the Men's Expert Freestyle class, local Mike Spradlin captured Kern Valley bragging rights defeating paddling partner Paul Armes. Kernville's Kurt Perkins placed first in the Sport Freestyle class, and Justin Patt (Nevada City, CA) won Juniors.
Reigning World Champion Rebecca Giddens and world class slalom boater Eric Giddens set a fast course for the Tom Johnson Slalom and placed first in K1 Expert Elite with clean runs and blazing fast times. Junior Tomas Wilkening was impressive, finishing third in K1 Expert Elite, just behind past U.S. slalom team member Corey Nielsen. Skills honed by kayak polo, Katherine Macey, Scott Ostrem and Rob Logan all paddled the course exceptionally well.
Three seconds was the margin of victory in both the Men's and Women's divisions of K1 Wildwater class of the Downriver race. Eric Giddens edged a rabbit ear clad Brent Reitz for the win, and Katharine Edmunston bested Marci Cary.
In the hotly contested finals of the head-to-head raft races Team Sierra South took advantage of a fierce battle between the second and third place boats to beat Dr. Dry's Team Scum to the finish line.
Many thanks to all those that took part in this year's Kern River Festival! And a special "Thank You!" to all the volunteers and sponsors, and especially to Terry Valle and the Kern Valley River Council for putting on the event. For all the 2003 Kern River Festival results, see the Kern Valley River Council web site.
We have new Transformers, G-Rides, GT 7.5, 7.8, 8.1, FX 5.7, Blackwaters, Sparkys, Sundances, Hulas, and Festivas in stock. Check 'em out in the New Boat Barn and Kayak Comparison Chart. We have demo boats of most models, and there is plenty of water to see how they paddle.
