What a surprise this weekend! Saturday morning, the flow was pretty much as expected, with the total release to the Lower Kern at about 635 cfs. But, by 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon the release was increased to about 900 cfs, and remained at that level through Sunday. This morning, the reported released is up over a 1000 cfs!

The water we have this year vividly illustrate the inadequacy of the supplemental releases specified as part of the conditions for the new KR3 powerplant license. In a year like this year, during the prime boating period of April 16 - July 4 weekend, Edison would not be required to supplement flows for whitewater recreation unless the daily average full natural flow of the Kern exceeds 1400 cfs.
That means, if these license conditions were being enforced, there would have been NO supplemental whitewater releases from June 4 to July 4. Zero. It doesn't make sense. This is precisely when the supplemental water is needed.
Some of the best runs on the Upper Kern are in this section, including the Fairview Run, the only class III run on the Upper Kern other than the Powerhouse Run. Other outstanding Upper Kern runs affected by the diversion include Chamise Gorge, Salmon Creek, Ant Canyon, Thunder Run, and the Cable Run. (See KR3 Relicensing for more info.)

Flows on the Lower Kern have been in the 1000 to 1300 cfs range, and this morning the flow is about 1000 cfs. Lake Isabella is already near last year's minimum storage level, so look for the release to the Lower to continue to decline. The Miracle to Democrat run on the Lower is commonly run by kayaks down to about 750 cfs. As you would expect, some of the rapids become more congested and difficult as the water drops. Below 500-600 cfs, sections of the run become very creeky and congested.
A number of folks from Sierra South, Hyside, the Kern River Alliance, and Take It Outside were in Salt Lake City for the Outdoor Retailers show this week. They expected to see some exciting new products and presentations, but "never in a million years" did they expect downtown Salt Lake to be struck by an F2 tornado. Everyone from our area is OK, but according to MSNBC, one person was killed and over 100 were injured. For more information see Tornado leaves 15 hospitalized.
