Important information about River Notes.
The situation is very complex and there is still a lot of uncertainty, but in the last run of the MRF computer weather model there was a big change in the weather predicted for Southern California. The RiverPhoto graphic (from the CDC) shows the predicted precipitation from 4:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on New Year's Day. If the prediction verifies there could be light rain as early as New Year's Eve. The snowfall this December has been well below normal, and it would be great to celebrate Y2K with the first of a series of Pacific storms. Prudent forecasters are taking a "wait and see" attitude before changing their forecasts, but it looks like a pattern change could be in the works. We'll see!

A strong ridge of high pressure is in control of the weather on the west coast. As a result, no snow is expected in the Southern Sierra through at least Christmas. As the pattern evolves during the week, computer models show the center of the high migrating northward and an upper level trough digging back into the southwest and developing into a weak upper level low over southern Arizona. There is very little moisture forecast to be associated with the low and it's main affect should be to stir up some wind in the desert southwest.
The forecast for the week between Christmas and New Year's isn't as clear. Some model runs suggest a trough or low undercutting the high and around the first of the year there is some hint of a basic change to a wetter pattern for California. With the snowpack well under normal, any change would be welcome!

If your school or youth group would be interested in arranging an outdoor education class, give us a call. We can accommodate over 80 people in a multitude of programs. We do not run a survival school. We introduce the out-of-doors to students in a positive and enjoyable way, teaching them skills necessary to enjoy the natural world with confidence and wide-eyed wonderment for the rest of their lives. Most of our trips are water-based around rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. We would like to tailor a program to fit your school's needs. Update. Spotty rain showers in the Central Valley. Not much happening in the Sierra. The trough has continued to dig south, off the coast, and the vorticity enhanced area with it. Satellite photos show a large area of cold, cellular cumulus offshore. As the trough moves through there's some chance of precipitation from instability showers, but the pessimistic view of the computer models and QPF forecasts of about 0.1 inch appear to have been accurate.

Computer models are pessimistic about rainfall amounts resulting from the approaching system, generally forecasting a 0.25 inch or less in the Southern Sierra. But, there is some hope for somewhat more snow at higher elevations than is currently forecast.
Morning satellite images show an area of enhancement in the base of the trough off the Southern California coast. Surface pressure is falling in this area, and it appears a surface low could develop. In addition, the flow into the Sierra is more southwesterly than previously forecast, so there could be some terrain induced enhancement of precipitation. If a surface low develops, the system should also slow somewhat as it moves through the region. All that said, precipitable water values are not very impressive, so even in the best/worse (take your pick) the system should not be very wet. I'm hopeful that the higher elevations of the Southern Sierra will receive at least 0.5 inch of precipitation. We'll see!

Important information about River Notes.
Looks like the Southern Sierra could get a little snow Thursday evening into Friday. How much depends on the track and speed of the shortwave trough as it digs south, and moves through Southern California.
The shortwave is expected to develop into a closed low or perhaps a cut-off low as it moves into the area. A cut-off low is usually slower moving than a closed low embedded in the flow. Another issue is the position of the system as it moves south. A more westward track would generally result in more precipitation. So the questions are: east or west; slow or fast? Most of the models seem to be sitting on the fence and reality could fall either way. Current forecasts suggest about 0.5" of precipitation in the Southern Sierra, but with all the variables associated with this particular system we'll just have to see!

Mostly sunny, but cool, weather is forecast over much of California tomorrow. On Sunday, a weak trough is expected to result in a chance of showers in far Northern California, and partly cloudy skies in the South. Some fog is expected in the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley.
