River Notes for Tuesday, January 29, 2002

Important information about River Notes.

We awakened to snow in Kernville! Of course it is just one of the many reasons why we live in such a great place. After a wet December and dry January, we are sitting at about 100% of normal snowpack for the date, with half of our snow accumulation still to come. (April 1 is the end of the reporting year.) Keep your snow fingers crossed for more snow in the next two months. Forecasting models can't decide whether February and March will be wet or dry... We vote for wet!

Remember, Thursday by 5:00pm is the last day to qualify for the 10% factory rebate from Confluence on any WaveSport or Wilderness System boat we have in stock. This is a great way to save some big bucks on a boat! To view a picture and specs of all our new boats, go to the New Boat Barn and Kayak Comparison Chart, then give us a call!

River Notes for Friday, January 25, 2002

Important information about River Notes.

January has been dry over much of the state. Mammoth Mountain has recorded only 20 inches of snow this month, and most of that was back on January 3rd. Fortunately, the Sierra received above average snowfall through December and the current snowpack remains slightly above normal.

The pack should get a good boost this weekend. Models have been trending to higher precipitation amounts, especially in the Southern Sierra. The HPC QPF forecast shows approximately 2.0 inches water equivalent in the Southern Sierra for the period Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon. This translates to about 20 inches of snow. Snow levels are expected to start out at about 6000 ft. and lower to 3000-4000 ft. by Sunday. We'll see!

River Notes for Thursday, January 3, 2002

Important information about River Notes.

Snow sensor data is incomplete, but available data suggests about 0.5 inch SWE was added to the Kern River basin snowpack by yesterday's storm. Today's Summary of Snow Water Equivalents put the Southern Sierra at about 135% of normal for the date. Today's RiverPhoto is a 1km resolution visible satellite photo of the Southwest. The abundant Sierra snowpack is easily seen on the left of the photo, as well as clouds piled into the southeast corner of the San Joaquin Valley. Standing wave clouds suggest strong northerly winds over the Grapevine. The cold front that moved through our area yesterday is now located over the Four Corners area.

With temperatures slated to warm up and more sunshine on the way, it may turn out to be a good time to take advantage of the higher base flow on the Upper Kern and the increased release on the Lower. This morning the flow at Kernville is about 575 cfs and nudging upward and the flow on the Lower at Borel is about 500 cfs.
