Today's RiverPhoto is of an Inflatable Kayak at Ewings Rapid. Inflatable kayaks are a great way to experience the thrill and adventure of whitewater paddling. They are stable and fun to paddle. There are one-person and two-person versions. If you are short on time try our Half-Day I.K. trip, or take the whole day and do our One-Day IK Combo. IK trips are perfect for youth and business groups. Call 800-457-2082 toll free for more information.

Today, the Lower Kern at Borel is at about 930 cfs. This is a good flow for Miracle to Democrat Run, with tons of playspots for kayaks. The Upper Kern has been running about 450 cfs. That's still sufficient water for the Forks, Limestone and Powerhouse runs.

Recently we updated our web site and moved the page links on our sidebar menu to a pull down list at the top of the page. This provided more space for information and pictures on the page, and all of the original links are accessible in the pulldown page list. Today, the Lower Kern at Borel is at about 1300 cfs. This is an excellent flow for the Dam Run and the Miracle to Democrat Run, and is also a good level for the difficult whitewater on the Kern Below Democrat Dam.

While there is sufficient water for the Forks, Limestone and Powerhouse runs on the Upper Kern, an additional 16 miles of river would still be runnable if it were not for the diversion of water at Fairview Dam for the KR3 powerplant . This includes the Fairview Run, Chamise Gorge, Salmon Creek, Ant Canyon, Thunder Run, and the Cable Run. (See KR3 Relicensing for more info.)

What's the flow? That's a question we're always asking, and an important one to a paddler. That's why we've included a number of ways to obtain current flow data on our web site. The near realtime Kern flow data on our web site is provided by the Army Corp. of Engineers, Sacramento District, (COE) web site. A few years ago we could only dream about access to such timely data. The COE is responsible for the collection of data from the gage in Riverside Park, and is the root source of flow data originating from this gage. Their flow data can be accessed a number of ways from our web site:

Sometimes the COE flow data cannot be accessed and this can be frustrating when you are used to having flow data literally at your fingertips. So what do you do when the COE data is inaccessible? Here are some options:

Curious about how all the new kayaks perform? Then plan to head to Kernville for our Free Kayak Demo Days. We'll have all of the hot new whitewater and touring/recreational kayaks available for you to check out. It's a great opportunity to try the new boats on the water, and Sierra South staff will be on hand to answer all your questions.

This includes the Fairview Run, Chamise Gorge, Salmon Creek, Ant Canyon, Thunder Run, and the Cable Run. (See KR3 Relicensing for more info.)

Additional reaches of the Kern affected by large diversion are the section of river from immediately below Lake Isabella to the Borel Powerhouse, and the reach from Democrat Dam to KR1. Typically, 600 cfs is diverted by the Borel Canal, severely affecting recreational use and stream conditions on the Dam Run. More than 400 cfs is diverted at Democrat Dam, reducing the flow on the Cadillacs, Richbar and Cataracts runs. All three sections, collectively, are referred to as the Kern Below Democrat. See our Conservation & Access pages for more information.
