River Notes for Friday, March 23, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

It's not too early to make your plans for Spring and Summer 2001. We've uploaded the 2001 Whitewater Kayaking, Recreational Boating, Climbing, Rafting and Event Calendar.

In addition to our 2 day and 3 day Kayaking 101 classes we are offering a special 5 day Total Kayaking Immersion class. If you would like to sample lake and river paddling try our new Lake to River Kayaking trip. Spend the morning in a two person recreational boat on Lake Isabella and then switch to a two person Inflatable Kayak and paddle whitewater on the Kern River! To ensure your spot, make your reservations early!

Hey, the Upper Kern has been around 600 cfs since Wednesday! It's Spring and the River is coming up.... and Brush Creek too! Check out Paul Armes in a Inazone 230 on the Upper Falls, and Katharine Haines in a Dagger CFS on the Lower Falls. Here's another unique view. (We'll have more Brush Creek pics later...)

We are in full operation this weekend so plan your Rafting or Kayaking adventure today! Check out the Early Bird pricing on our River Kayaking Classes.

We have Werner's new neutral bent shaft paddles in stock. Neutral means that the grip and blades are all aligned with the main straight section of the shaft. Grip indexes are integrated which provides stable and smooth leverage during all strokes. The neutral bend allows an easier transition from a straight shaft. Paddling with a bent shaft reduces the stress on wrist, elbows, and shoulders. Pictured from left to right: Double Diamond, Side Kick, and Player neutral bent shaft paddles.

Just in from Dagger... The New Honcho, a great new playboat for the Big & Tall paddler: 170-250lbs, 7'10" x 26in, 70gal vol, 42lbs. Paddlers up to 6'5" fit well... Price $999. We'll have pics in the New Boat Barn soon. To check click here or call 1-800-376-7303.

In another remarkable turnaround, heavy February snows have dramatically increased the Sierra snowpack, ensuring good water for the fast approaching boating season. Today's Summary of Snow Water Equivalents lists the statewide Percent of Normal for the date at 85%. On January 1 it was 7%!

Data for some of the snow courses in the Kern basin is still pending, but it looks like the Kern snowpack is at about 75%-80% of normal for the date. This year there is unusually heavy snow in the lower elevations of the basin, with as much as 171% of the April 1 normal, so the season should get off to a running start.

Speaking of which... Kayaking classes start next weekend, March 17. Kayaking 101, 101 & 201 Tune-Up, and 101 & 201 AM Roll / PM Tune-up classes are scheduled.

Check out the new Werner neutral bent shaft paddles. Neutral means that the grip and blades are all aligned with the main straight section of the shaft. More snow on the way for the Southern Sierra! The computer models had a tough time forecasting the weather for this weekend and early next week. They have flip-flopped from big storm; to weak storm; to practically no storm, and back again. Today they seem to be converging on the idea that California is going to get drenched, again.

Today a weak system is resulting in showers and rain over much of Central California and could result in some showers and light snow in the Kern River basin today. Like last weekend, the timing of the onset of precipitation on Saturday is difficult to forecast. Overrunning moisture ahead of the system could result in light rain earlier than expected. In any case rain and snow are forecast by late Saturday afternoon or evening, with the main event Sunday into Monday. Periods of rain are expected to continue through the week. We'll see!

Spring is just around the corner and there's a lot of low elevation snow that's going to get the paddling season off to a great start!

Check out the new Dagger CFS and Super Ego. Designed for creeks, the CFS is 7'9" and has a quick surfacing 75 gallons. Safety features include a combination minicell/polyethylene bow wall, stainless steel grab handles/extraction bars, and ergonomics that allow for a "no-hands" exit The Ego and SuperEgo are super-loose freestyle kayaks with features that include adjustable thighbraces, adjustable seat, backband, and pre-cut hip bolsters. Here's what the hulls look like. Click on the following links to select these boats in the New Boat Barn: Ego - Super Ego - CFS
