o Short-term drought concerns have been alleviated in many areas of the Southwest especially southern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado... The unusual southward shift in the winter storm track that helped the Southwest has resulted in deficient rain and snow to the north. Moderate to severe drought developed over the winter in portions of the Pacific Northwest. Some mountain observation sites in Idaho, Montana and Washington were snowless in early March for the first time in more than 30 years. More.

o For most of its 125-mile course from Nevada's high desert to the bottom of Death Valley, the Amargosa River is as dry and empty as a ghost town. The only time the Amargosa really runs is during abnormally wet periods -- once every year or two, sometimes less -- and even then the river is unpredictable and fleeting. That is exactly what made Bert Welti want to run it. More.

o California is blessed with some of the most beautiful and diverse rivers in the world. From the steep creeks of the high Sierra to the broad and powerful rivers of the Central Valley, each river tells a personal story and provides a unique experience to the visitor. More.

o What rescue equip. do you carry? Shoes, of course, though I'm pretty optimistic. Most down-days I carry rope, knife, handpaddles, couple caribiners, Cliff bar, lighter, and one Petzl Ti-bloc. I've got a little Adventure Medical Kit I've enhanced with Lortabs, Flexeril, and a space blanket for steep, remote, or long days. I've got a wad of orange flagging tape I use to mark new wood on popular runs. River Notes for Tuesday, May 31, 2005

Important information about River Notes.

Preliminary flow data from the Corps of Engineers (COE) indicate peak flows have occurred on the Upper Kern at Kernville (Riverside Park) and for the total inflow to Lake Isabella, including the South Fork. Unless it gets unexpectedly hot over the next few days, these peaks are likely to be the seasonal peaks from snowmelt.

The highest reported hourly stage and flow for the Kern at Kernville was 10.05 ft. and 8211 cfs on Friday, May 27 at 1:00 P.M. The highest reported average daily flow for the Kern at Kernville was 7280 cfs on Saturday, May 28. The highest reported average daily inflow to Lake Isabella was 7077 cfs on Friday, May 27. These figures will probably be revised to reconcile flows reported at Kernville and corresponding inflows to Lake Isabella. The USGS gage on the South Fork near Onyx, recorded a peak flow of 1,710 cfs on the afternoon of May 17th.

Update 06/01/05 7:30 A.M. This graph of the temperature at the Pascoes snow sensor at 9150 ft. in the Kern River basin shows why the flow on the Upper Kern dropped about 1500 cfs from Sunday to Tuesday, and is now increasing again. There's still plenty of snow. Yesterday's COE FCR Report estimated about 318,000 acre-feet remaining in the pack, which is about 65% of the amount of water currently in Lake Isabella! This morning at 6:00, the COE gage at Riverside Park was at 9.55 ft. and 6474 cfs.

The last time we had this much water was in June of 1998, when the strongest El Niño on record resulted in a record snowpack. That season the snowmelt was also delayed by cool weather, and the River didn't peak until June 17th at about 7276 cfs. This year, CNRFC's AHPS forecast based on conditions as of 5/27 suggests flows on the Upper Kern remaining above 3000 cfs into late June, and above 1000 cfs well into August. Flows on the Lower Kern should be good all summer long. What a year!

Today's RiverPhoto is a shot of 2004 Slalom Sierra Cup winner Keith Kishiyama running Vortex Rapid, on the Forks, at about 3700 cfs, earlier this month. The photographer was Ian Buckley, and Keith's boat is a Perception Java.

River Notes for Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Important information about River Notes.

May 10th was a cold day at the higher elevations of the Kern River basin. At the Pascoes snow sensor at 9150 ft., the average temperature for the day was 23 degrees. Since then, temps have warmed significantly. The warmer temperatures have pushed the average daily inflow to Isabella (N.F. & S.F. Kern combined) from 2871 cfs on May 12th to 5947 cfs yesterday (Monday). During that same period the average daily flow for the Kern at Kernville has increased from 2104 cfs to 5963 cfs, and peak hourly flows for the Kern at Kernville have increased from about 2200 cfs to 6700 cfs yesterday morning. At 3:00 a.m. this morning, the Kern at Kernville recorded a flow of 6999 cfs at 9.71 ft. When will the Upper Kern peak and what will be the flow?

Update 05/26/05 8:00 a.m. This morning at 8:00 a.m. the COE gage in the Park recorded a stage of 9.80 ft. and flow of 7307 cfs. CNRFC's updated Short Term Snowmelt Forecast from 5/25 continues to project a peak one day volume for the total inflow to Isabella of about 13,000 acre-feet on or about 5/28 (Saturday). The CNRFC's updated AHPS forecast, based on conditions as of 5/24, indicates a median probable 5-day average inflow to Isabella of about 7100 cfs. The cooling that had been expected for Friday appears to have been delayed by a day or two, so it looks like the possibility of peak flows above 7500-8000 cfs could continue through Memorial Day. In addition there's a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the high country over the next several days, and a large T-storm in the right place could increase the flow. And... there's still a lot of snow above 11,000 ft. If triple digit temps occur at lower elevations over the next week or two, additional peaks above 6500-7000 cfs might occur.

When? Temperatures are expected to increase again today and tomorrow. The NWS projects highs at 8000 ft. of 78 today, and 79 tomorrow, with temps a few degrees cooler by Friday. Given the (approximate) two day lag for snowmelt to reach Kernville, the Kern at Kernville could peak this Friday or Saturday. This coincides with the date forecast by the California Nevada River Forecast Center in their Short Term Snowmelt Forecast from 5/18.

How high? The CNRFC's Short Term Snowmelt Forecast from 5/18 projects a peak one day volume for the total inflow to Isabella of about 13,000 acre-feet. This corresponds to an average inflow over 24 hours of about 6500 cfs. CNRFC's AHPS forecast based on conditions as of 5/20, indicates a median probable 5-day average inflow to Isabella of about 7400 cfs. Yesterday's average inflow to Isabella was about 6000 cfs, so peak average inflows in the range of 6500 cfs to 7500 cfs could result in peak hourly flows at Kernville in the neighborhood of 7500 cfs to 8500 cfs. This would exceed the peak flow (from snowmelt) seen in the big El Niño year of 1998. We'll see!

Mild Spring weather with weak systems periodically producing snow and cool temperatures at higher elevations of the Sierra has been slowing the snowmelt and moderating the flow on the Upper Kern. California Cooperative Snow Survey's daily Regional Snowpack Summary shows the Sierra Southern Section at 210% of normal for the date. Snow course measurements from May 1 show the Kern basin at 186% of the normal May 1 total. This is the most snow reported for May 1 since 1998. This comparison of April 1 seasonal snowpack totals shows how this year compares to other big snowpack years. The May 1 update of the Bulletin 120 runoff forecast for April through July projects the inflow to Lake Isabella to be between 130% and 153% of normal.

River Notes for Thursday, May 5, 2005

Important information about River Notes.

California Cooperative Snow Survey's snow course measurements for May 1 are in and the Kern River basin is reported at 186% of the normal May 1 total. This is the most snow reported for May 1 since 1998. This comparison of April 1 seasonal snowpack totals shows how this year compares to other big snowpack years. The April 26 update of the Bulletin 120 runoff forecast for April through July projects the inflow to Lake Isabella to be between 133% and 153% of normal.

More snow is forecast for the higher elevations of the Sierra today, but partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures are expected by Saturday. Flows on the Upper Kern and Lower Kern are up! This morning at 11:00 the Corps of Engineers (COE) is reporting the flow on the Upper Kern at Kernville at 2633 cfs and the flow on the Lower Kern at Borel at 1128 cfs. The flow below Isabella Dam and upstream of Borel is reported at 690 cfs.

Flow projections from the California Nevada River Forecast Center, based on snow conditions as of May 3, continue to indicate the likelihood of flows of 3500-5000 cfs between now and the end of May. A pattern of mild Spring weather with weak systems periodically producing some mountain snow has been slowing the snowmelt and moderating the flow on the Upper Kern. A new Short Term Snowmelt Forecast (PDF) was issued by the CNRFC on May 4. For the period May 4-8 the average inflow into Lake Isabella is expected to be between about 3000 cfs and 4200 cfs.

Great water and weather greeted all that participated in the 2005 Kern River Kayak & Raft Festival. Many thanks to the paddlers, spectators, sponsors and all the volunteers that help put on the event. And an extra special "Thank You!" to paddler Terry Valle who manages to organize the Festival year after year, while somehow meeting her clients' accounting deadlines! Results from all the events, and Photos are now available online.

More than 20 paddlers participated in an unofficial race on the "waterfall" section of Brush Creek on Saturday and everyone that paddled in the race, raved about it. Eric Giddens edged Dan "Skippy" Simene by 5 seconds, finishing the segment in 2:39. Corey Volt finished 3rd in 2:45. The hit of the Saturday night Festival dinner and party was Andy Stone's video short "Brush Creek 2005 - The Race that Never Happened!" With Los Angeles experiencing its wettest rainy season in 120 years, Southern California creeks and streams have been cranking. One of the real Southern California classics is Piru Creek between Pyramid Lake and Lake Piru. In a move that is hard to understand, the Forest Service has withdrawn its recommendation that this remarkable reach of Piru Creek be considered for Wild & Scenic status. For more information on how you can help correct this mistake, see Piru Creek - Frenchmans Flat Campground to Lake Piru.
