River Notes for Wednesday, November 29, 2000

Today's 1024z HPC Quantitative Precipitation Forecast shows somewhat more precipitation in Northern California than yesterday's, with perhaps a slightly higher QPF for the northern reaches of the Kern River basin. Based on current forecasts and data there shouldn't be much snow south of the Kings-Kern divide. The !2z ETA shows precipitation extending further south than the 06z AVN.

In the medium range there is still much uncertainty. "Spaghetti" plot of ensemble members for Sunday continue to show a developing trough along the coast, but computer models have produced a wide variety of possible scenarios. At least it appears the Southern Sierra will have unsettled weather early next week, with a chance of some snow. We'll see!

A weak disturbance is forecast to begin affecting Northern California tonight and tomorrow, with a slight chance of precipitation in the northern regions of the Kern River basin later on Tuesday and into Wednesday. At this time computer models indicate the upper low will be east of the area by Thanksgiving, with mostly clear skies and fair weather expected over much of Southern California.

Wow! If you missed the "Rudy" segment on the Travel Channel's Wild California yesterday evening you'll have another chance to see it. According to the Travel Channel TV Listings, it will be repeated November 18, 2000 11:00 PM EST and November 26, 2000 1:00 PM EST. Don't miss it! (Sierra South owner and paddler Tom Moore talks about rolling over, and Head Instructor Marc Vernon guides Rudy through the rapids.)

It's raining and snowing in the northern half of the state this afternoon and it looks like the Southern Sierra could get some snow tonight. HPC forecasts suggest about 0.25" to 0.50" liquid equivalent with more snow in the northern reaches of the Kern River basin.

River Notes for Thursday, November 2, 2000

Important information about River Notes.

Last August we told you about Rudy Garcia-Tolson, an 11-year-old double amputee that we had the privilege to teach to kayak. Watch for Rudy on the Travel Channel on Sunday, November 12, at 8PM Pacific Time learning how to kayak with Sierra South.

Rudy is not just another kayaking student. Rudy is an inspirational athlete who despite the fact that he lost both legs above the knee at age five, is now a 12 year old sub nine-minute mile runner, swims 3,000 yds a day as a competitive swimmer, winning against able bodied swimmers, and has become one of the key success stories of the Challenged Athletes' Foundation.

Rudy has had his sights set on whitewater kayaking for a while. Watch how we improvised outfitting the kayak for Rudy and how he and the other young students in his class pit themselves against the mighty Wild & Scenic Kern River. Rudy is a very sensitive young man who touched all of us with his determination, positive outlook, and "braveheart". We hope you will tune in.
