River Notes for Wednesday, November 24, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

Over the next two days the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center is forecasting up to 7 inches of rainfall in western Washington State. The NWS in Seattle has issued a Flood Statement and flooding of several rivers seems likely.

No flooding here... Over Thanksgiving and the long weekend the weather should be generally fair in the Kernville - Lake Isabella area with some variable high clouds at times. At the moment, the first chance for some wet weather appears to be early next week.

One benefit to low water is that you can scramble around your favorite steep creek, check out the drops, and do a little day-dreaming. Today's RiverPhoto is a low water shot of the slide downstream of the lower falls on Brush Creek. The slide leads to a cool S-turn drop. Here's another shot of a multi-stepped drop upstream of the lower falls.

At the moment, all the computer models are saying Thanksgiving will be fair in the Southland. Except for the possibilty of some fog in the San Joaquin Valley it should be mostly clear and beautiful. We'll see!

River Notes for Saturday, November 20, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

Last night's frontal passage did not produce much rain in the lowlands, but moist southwesterly winds associated with the system were lifted by the mountains to generate about 0.5 inch of rain or snow water equivalent at several mountain stations. Some preliminary precipitation totals: Upper Tyndall Creek - 0.5 inch, Quaking Aspen 0.6 inch, Beach Meadows - 0.5 inch, Johnsondale - 0.5 inch, Kernville - 0.1 inch, and Isabella Dam - 0.05 inch.

Today's RiverPhoto is a visible light GOES-10 satellite photo of Southern California, taken this morning at 9:00 A.M. PST. It's an interesting shot, because you can see the new snow on the mountains of the upper Kern River basin; Lake Isabella with a "bathtub ring;" clouds piled into the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley by northwesterly winds, with standing waves over the crest of the Tehachapis; Owens Dry Lake; and the Salton Sea. The coastal basins are cloud covered from Santa Barabara to San Diego, but the high and low deserts are sparkling clear. There also appears to be a weak circulation center just off the coast.

River Notes for Thursday, November 18, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

Friday evening's weather system now appears to be moving a little faster and be a little wetter than predicted by computer models earlier in the week. The front will weaken dramatically as it moves south, but enough punch should remain for the Kern River basin to receive about 0.25" to 0.5" of precipitation. We'll see!

River Notes for Tuesday, November 16, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

A series of weather systems will be moving through California over the next few days. The first system in the series is expected into the Southern Sierra early Wednesday morning, a second system is expected to follow in the late Friday to early Saturday timeframe, and then a third system early next week.

For tomorrow, the Kern Basin is forecast to be on the fringe of the main area of precipitation, but there is some enhancement occurring as an area of vorticity rounds the base of the trough. If a wave develops, then there is a chance of more precipitation than is currently forecast. We'll see!

River Notes for Tuesday, November 9, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

The Medium Range Forecast Model did a pretty good job of predicting the strength of system that passed through the area overnight Sunday. Beach Meadows recieved about 0.25", Quaking Aspen about 0.5", and Pascoes about 0.5" of precipitation. The rain and snow has bumped the river up to over 200 cfs this morning. Judging from how the river responded to this relatively small amount of precipitation, a stronger storm would result in a significant increase in flow.

Computer models are indicating more rain for Northern California this week, with a weak cut-off upper low hanging off the coast of Central/Southern California at the end of the week. At the moment no precpitation is expected in the Kern area from this system, but maybe that will change. Longer range ensemble forecasts suggest at least a chance of some unsettled weather next week. We'll see.

River Notes for Thursday, November 4, 1999

Important information about River Notes.

For the last several runs the MRF computer weather model has been hinting at a chance of precipitation in the Central Sierra early next week, Today's 120 hour forecast shows a pretty good glob of moisture moving into the Sierra on Monday. This forecast is supported by other computer models (ECMWF, GEM, NGP), although they differ on the timing. Some models suggest the system will move in on Sunday, others as late as Tuesday.

As was the case many times last year, the Kern River basin is expected to be on the southern fringe of the system. A slight change north or south could dramatically affect the amount of precipitation. At the moment it looks like 0.25 to maybe 0.5 inch of precipitation is a reasonable guesstimate. There will be a better idea of what's likely to happen in a couple days when higher resolution models cover the time period.
