River Notes for Wednesday, October 31, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

The HPC was pretty much on the money in the Southern Sierra with yesterday's precipitation forecast. Some forecasts suggested that less than 0.5 inch would fall south of Sequoia. Based on preliminary data from snow sensors and RAWS stations, Kernville recorded about 0.6", Johnsondale 1.2", Upper Tyndall Creek 1.3", Crabtree Meadow 1", Pascoes 0.9" and Beach Meadows 0.9" of precipitation. That's a great start to the Winter season!

Snow levels were relatively high with the early season storm, and at lower elevations the precipitation fell as rain. The river is up about 50 cfs early this morning, but with the dry conditions proceeding the storm, much of the rain was probably absorbed by the soil. Johnsondale did receive over an inch of rain, and a slow warming trend is forecast, so it's possible that the river may come up a little more. We'll see!

NOAA/CPC has released their Winter Outlook for 2001-2002. In the absence of a strong El Nino or La Nina. the West Coast trend is to "Climatology" for both temperature and precipitation, with the exception of the desert Southwest, which is expected to have warmer than normal temperatures. The Climate Prediction Center has also released the latest Long Range Precipitation Forecast, which mirrors the Winter Outlook.

Historically the Kern River basin has had both above average and below average snowpacks when neutral or near neutral ENSO conditions have existed. For examples, take a look at these snowpack charts for Pascoes and Upper Tyndall Creek. The weather record suggests that the Sierra receives a large percentage of its snowpack from a relatively small number (5-6) of storms, so a shift in track of one or two storms can have a dramatic effect on the snowpack. Following three years of below average snowpacks we're due!

All of kayaks from this season's fleet have been posted to the Used Boat Barn, and there are still some great deals on new boats in the New Boat Barn. Also be sure and check the Used Paddling Gear section in the Used Boat Barn, with great prices on used paddles, helmets, PFDs and more!

River Notes for Tuesday, October 30, 2001

Important information about River Notes.

Hey, it's raining and snowing in the Kern basin! As of 2:00 pm Kernville had recorded about 0.4 inch, Johnsondale 0.8 inch, Upper Tyndall Creek 0.7 inch, and Crabtree Meadow about 0.9 inch of precipitation. Intellicast radar suggests moderate rain and snow is continuing over much of the Sierra.

NOAA/CPC has released their Winter Outlook for 2001-2002.
