o Forests Show Resilience as Fires Pass. Despite grim evaluations during summer, officials say large swaths only lightly burned... In Sequoia National Forest, where a fire burned for six weeks and threatened some of the most majestic trees on Earth, only about 8% of the 150,000 acres that burned was severely damaged, according to an analysis by the U.S. Forest Service. o On the weekend of September 21, 2002, adult chinook and coho salmon began dying by the thousands as they returned to the Klamath River and encountered dramatically low river flows and poor water quality, including high water temperatures well above the tolerance levels of these cold-water fish. Threatened adult coho salmon migrate up the Klamath River from mid-September through early November to spawn, with peak migration coming in early October.. More: American Rivers

o Boxer Introduces Bill to Protect California's Wild Rivers. The bill will significantly expand the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System and the National Wilderness Preservation System on federally managed public lands in California. S. 2535 is the largest river protection and the third largest wilderness bill in California history. More: American Whitewater

o Science Academy endorses prescription to cure the Corps. As Congress considers reforms to address the scandal-plagued planning process at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, American Rivers hailed a National Academy of Sciences finding today that the agency's studies of costly and controversial projects "should be subjected to independent review by objective, expert panels." River Notes for Friday, October 25, 2002

Important information about River Notes.

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Diagnostic Advisory issued October 10, 2002, says "Moderate warm episode (El Niño) conditions continued during September.." Forecasts suggest that warm episode conditions are likely to continue into January 2003, with less certain conditions beyond that date. The Long Lead Precipitation Forecast, issued by the Climate Prediction Center October 17, continues to show an increased probability of above average precipitation in Southern California this Winter.
