Learn to Guide Class II-IV Whitewater Rafting
Sierra South’s Guide School is a class for those interested in guiding to earn money? You will first learn to guide the Class II-III section of the Upper or Lower Kern River for Sierra South’s rafting season. This course gives a beginning rafter the foundation necessary to become a commercial Class II-III whitewater guide. No prior experience is necessary. For those who would like to work on the more demanding Class IV section of the Upper or Lower Kern for the upcoming rafting season you will continue with more intensive training geared toward advanced guide skills, river reading, river rescue, safety, and much more.
Completion of this course is required to commercially guide for us. However, it does not guarantee a whitewater position with Sierra South. You must be invited to attend Guide School, so fill out an application on our employment page.
Schedule & Duration
Months of operation: April – May
Guide School: TBA; six to seven hours per day
Classes begin at 8 a.m.
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your class
Must be at least 16 years old to be qualified to guide
Guides must pass a 1st-Aid/CPR course in addition to guide school; there is an additional charge for this
Must weigh between 100 and 275 lbs.
Please wear shoes that will stay on your feet in the water, such as tennis shoes, water shoes, or sandals that have a heel strap. No flip-flops or bare-feet!
A PFD, Helmet and transportation are provided

The 2 day Forks of the Kern is the most difficult and remote run we offer, and one of the premier wilderness whitewater rafting trips in the USA.
This trip offers continuous Class IV-V whitewater for 17 miles with big rapids like Upper Freeman, Vortex, Gauntlet, and Carson Falls. The spectacular Sierra scenery includes views of the Needles and the granite-lined gorge you’re traveling through as well as brief side hikes to waterfalls such as Freeman Falls, Peppermint Falls, and Dry Meadow Teacups. Gourmet outdoor meals are prepared by the guides at camp while you try your luck catching an elusive native golden trout. If we do not have a trip going or meet minimum numbers, we may book with an outside outfitter. A Class V Paddlers Evaluation is required prior to running class V whitewater.
Whitewater Wednesday returns to Kernville, on the Wild & Scenic Kern River; Whitewater, USA! It will be a fun-filled day of sunshine, water fights, soggy sneakers, and action-packed rapids. On this day only, the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, along with 4 commercial rafting companies operating on the Kern River, will sponsor different trip options:
This one-day clinic will feature three different classes, a Beginner Fundamentals Course, a River Running/Downriver Freestyle Course and a Creeking Clinic on Brush Creek, taught by the best kayakers in the world.
That night we will hold a gathering at Sierra South where guests and town members will be able to join us for a night of movies, beer, raffles, autographs, and stories from the world’s best kayakers.
Paddle with Pros Fundamentals: The fundamentals course will be catered towards beginner kayakers who are looking to improve their skills, such as the proper forward stroke technique, ferrying, eddy turns, draw strokes, identifying river features, edging, and how to properly outfit your gear. This class will be held on either the class II-III Lickety or Fairview sections of the Kern River. You can count on doing two or three runs on during the day. Upon completion of this class, students will receive a free kayak package rental and be eligible to rent a kayak in the future. What are you waiting for? Come out and learn with the professionals! Classes start at 9:00 am. sharp and are usually over by 4 pm. Lunch and transportation once you get to Sierra South are included. Cost $200
Paddle with Pros River Running/Downriver Freestyle: This clinic is designed for those looking to improve their overall river running technique. In addition, boaters also wanting to learn how to paddle the new-age slicey stern river running kayaks, such as the Jackson Antix, Waka Steeze, Pyranha Ripper, Liquidlogic Braap, etc, will benefit from this class. Paddlers should be comfortable in class III-IV whitewater, while improving their river reading skills, bracing, balance, timing, etc. Aspiring downriver freestyle paddlers will be introduced to moves, such as splatting, squirting, rock spins, boofing, and surfing. There is no doubt, mastering these skills, will help maximize the amount of fun you can have on your local river! This clinic will be held on Chamise, Cables, Limestone or Ant Canyon sections of the Kern River. Upon completion of this class, students will receive a free kayak package rental and be eligible to rent a kayak in the future. What are you waiting for? Come out and learn with the professionals! Paddle with Pros Creeking Clinic on Brush Creek: This Creeking Clinic is developed for those looking to improve their skills and techniques on waterfalls, slides, and boulder gardens. The focus will be on skills, such as boofing, scouting, hazard awareness, team dynamics, boat control techniques and how to confidently improve your paddling to a new level. This class will be held on Brush Creek (flows permitting). Back up sections of the Kern River would be Chamise, Cables, Limestone or Ant Canyon. Some of our trips require a minimum number of guests to operate. All kayaking classes require a minimum of 4 students. We will attempt to contact you if the minimums have not been met for the activity that you have chosen prior to the trip date. The Kern River Rock-n-Blues Festival supports veteran’s organizations. Entertainment Friday and Saturday. More than a dozen bands invited, as well as dozens of sit-in-artists. All lodging, restaurants, camping, and entertainment are within leisurely walking distance.
Christmas in Kernville has been an annual tradition for over 25 years. The Celebration works in conjunction with the Christmas in Kernville Toy Drive. This toy drive allows us to provide a memorable Christmas for our local children.
